Critical phrase: “Michael… will ARISE” (amad)

Hebrew: (amad) = “to stand, arise, stand up”

The implication: If Michael is going to “ARISE” or “STAND UP,” what is he doing NOW?

Answer: He’s STANDING IN THE WAY. He’s RESTRAINING.

When he arises/stands up (moves away from his position), what happens?

“There will be a time of distress such as has not happened from the beginning of nations until then.”

Michael is:

- A PRINCE ( sar) = ruler, commander, chief

- The GREAT PRINCE = highest ranking angelic prince

- YOUR PRINCE = assigned specifically to Israel/God’s people

- One of the CHIEF PRINCES = among the highest ranking angels

The Archangel

Jude 1:9 “But even the archangel Michael, when he was disputing with the devil about the body of Moses, did not himself dare to condemn him for slander but said, ‘The Lord rebuke you!’”

Greek: (archangelos)

(arche) = chief, ruler, first

(angelos) = messenger, angel

Michael = Chief Angel, Archangel

The only angel explicitly called “the archangel” in Scripture.

The Warrior Prince

Revelation 12:7-9 “Then war broke out in heaven. Michael and his angels fought against the dragon, and the dragon and his angels fought back. But he was not strong enough, and they lost their place in heaven. The great dragon was hurled down—that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray. - Verse 1: “At that time Michael… will arise”

Connection to 2 Thessalonians 2

2 Thessalonians 2:7 “For the secret power of lawlessness is already at work; but the one who now holds it back will continue to do so till he is taken out of the way.”

Greek: (ek mesou genetai) = “out of the midst he becomes/is taken”

Daniel 12:1 “Michael… will arise” (Hebrew: amad = stand up, move from position)

Both passages describe:

- Someone CURRENTLY restraining

- A moment when he MOVES/IS TAKEN from that position

- Immediate result: Tribulation/lawlessness unleashed

Michael “arising” = Michael being “taken out of the way”

The Territorial Prince Structure

Daniel 10:13, 20-21 “But the prince of the Persian kingdom resisted me twenty-one days. Then Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me… Soon I will return to fight against the prince of Persia, and when I go, the prince of Greece will come; but first I will tell you what is written in the Book of Truth. No one supports me against them except Michael, your prince.”

The structure revealed:

- Territorial princes assigned to nations (Persia, Greece, etc.)

- Many of these princes are REBELLIOUS (part of Satan’s kingdom)

- Michael is the faithful prince assigned to ISRAEL

- Michael fights AGAINST the rebellious territorial princes

God’s original design (Deuteronomy 32:8-9):

- Nations divided according to “sons of God” (angelic princes)

- The LORD’s portion = Israel

- Israel gets Michael (faithful)

- Other nations got princes who rebelled (became “gods” of paganism)

Michael as Part of Divine Governance

Michael represents the ANGELIC dimension of the Restrainer:

We’ve already established:

- Stars (Revelation 1:20) = Angelic messengers/administrators

- These angels minister to churches regionally

- They’re part of God’s Heavenly Administration and Courts

- They’re held in Christ’s right hand

Michael is the CHIEF of these angelic administrators:

- Highest ranking faithful angel

- Commands other angels (Revelation 12:7)

- Protects God’s covenant people

- Fights against Satan’s territorial princes

- Restrains Satan’s full dominion over earth

1. Satan’s Access to Heaven

Revelation 12:7-10 “Then war broke out in heaven. Michael and his angels fought against the dragon, and the dragon and his angels fought back. But he was not strong enough, and they lost their place in heaven… For the accuser of our brothers and sisters, who accuses them before our God day and night, has been hurled down.”

Currently:

- Satan still has SOME access to heaven (Job 1:6, Revelation 12:10)

- He accuses believers “day and night” before God

- Michael fights against Satan’s accusations and attacks

When Michael “arises” (moves from his restraining position):

- Satan is permanently cast out of heaven

- Happens at the Tribulation midpoint (Revelation 12:12-13)

- “Woe to the earth… because the devil has gone down to you! He is filled with fury, because he knows that his time is short.”

2. Satan’s Territorial Dominion

Ephesians 6:12: “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.”

Satan’s current structure:

- “Rulers” (archas) = territorial princes

- “Authorities” (exousias) = delegated powers

- “Powers of this dark world” = world-system controllers

- “Spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms” = demonic hierarchy

Michael currently:

- Stands against these territorial princes

- Protects God’s people from full demonic assault

- Restrains Satan’s ability to establish complete global dominion

- Fights the “prince of Persia” and “prince of Greece” (Daniel 10:20)

When Michael arises:

- Satan’s territorial princes are unleashed

- Demonic activity increases exponentially

- The Antichrist (empowered by Satan) can establish global rule

- Revelation 13:7 - “It was given power to wage war against God’s holy people and to conquer them. And it was given authority over every tribe, people, language and nation.”

3. The Antichrist’s Full Manifestation

Daniel 12:1 “At that time Michael, the great prince who protects your people, will arise. There will be a time of distress…”

Daniel 11:36-37 (immediately preceding): “The king will do as he pleases. He will exalt and magnify himself above every god and will say unheard-of things against the God of gods… He will show no regard for the gods of his ancestors or for the one desired by women, nor will he regard any god, but will exalt himself above them all.”

This is the Antichrist.
