To the Angel of the Church in St. George: The Laodicean Indictment
“And to the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write…” - Revelation 3:14
The Final Church Age: Laodicea Identified
The seven churches of Revelation 2-3 represent not only historical congregations but prophetic church ages throughout history. We now live in the final age - the Laodicean church period - characterized by lukewarm Christianity, material prosperity, spiritual poverty, and self-deception.
Nowhere is this more perfectly exemplified than in the evangelical churches of St. George, Utah.
Like ancient Laodicea - a wealthy banking center known for lukewarm water, eye salve, and fine clothing - modern St. George boasts material prosperity, religious respectability, and comfortable Christianity. Yet both cities share the same spiritual condition that makes Christ sick to His stomach.
The Laodicean Letter Applied to St. George
These Things Says the Amen, the Faithful and True Witness
“And to the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write, ‘These things says the Amen, the Faithful and True Witness, the Beginning of the creation of God…’” - Revelation 3:14
Christ introduces Himself to the Laodicean church as “the Faithful and True Witness” - in stark contrast to their unfaithful witness. The evangelical pastors of St. George have been unfaithful witnesses, failing to testify truthfully about:
- Mormon doctrine - knowing it’s false but remaining silent.
- The gospel - preaching prosperity instead of the cross.
- Eternal judgment - avoiding hell to maintain comfort.
- Their own spiritual condition - believing they are rich and need nothing.
Christ speaks as “the Amen” - the final word, the ultimate authority - to churches that have made human opinion and social comfort their final authority instead of God’s Word.
I Know Your Works
“I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I could wish you were cold or hot.” - Revelation 3:15
Christ’s Evaluation of St. George Churches
Not Hot (Passionate for Truth)
- No bold proclamation of the exclusive gospel to Mormon neighbors.
- No confrontation of works-based salvation in their community.
- No urgent evangelism despite being surrounded by false religion.
- No sacrificial ministry that costs them social standing.
Not Cold (Completely Worldly)
- Maintain Christian terminology and biblical references.
- Hold orthodox doctrine internally while failing to apply it externally.
- Conduct religious services and maintain Christian culture.
- Support missionary work in distant places while ignoring local mission field.
But Lukewarm (Comfortable Compromise)
- Preach just enough truth to satisfy consciences.
- Avoid just enough controversy to maintain respectability.
- Show just enough concern to appear caring.
- Demonstrate just enough activity to seem faithful.
You Make Me Sick
“So then, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of My mouth.” - Revelation 3:16
The Greek word for “vomit” (emeo) means to spew out with disgust. Christ is nauseated by lukewarm Christianity. He would rather deal with:
Cold Churches that reject Him outright - at least they’re honest about their spiritual condition and can be reached with truth.
Than Lukewarm Churches that claim His name while denying His power, that maintain religious facades while failing in fundamental mission, that speak Christian language while living carnal lives.
The evangelical churches of St. George make Jesus sick because they:
- Know the truth but won’t speak it.
- Have resources but won’t use them for the gospel.
- Claim Christ but won’t confront the false religion around them.
- Profess love but won’t risk social discomfort to save souls.
You Think You’re Rich, But You’re Wretched
“Because you say, ‘I am rich, have become wealthy, and have need of nothing’—and do not know that you are wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked…” - Revelation 3:17
St. George’s Self-Deception - “I am rich” - The Material Prosperity
- Beautiful church buildings and modern facilities.
- Comfortable pastoral salaries and retirement plans.
- Wealthy congregations with successful businesses.
- Growing attendance and expanding programs.
Have become wealthy - The Spiritual Pride
- Theological education and seminary degrees.
- Doctrinal orthodoxy and biblical knowledge.
- Conservative politics and moral positions.
- Respectability in the community.
Have need of nothing - The Self-Sufficiency
- Stable finances and reliable giving.
- Established ministries and proven programs.
- Social acceptance and political connections.
- Comfortable lifestyles and secure futures.
Christ’s Diagnosis: Spiritual Bankruptcy
“And do not know that you are wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked”
Wretched (talaiporos): Distressed, afflicted, experiencing hardship
- Despite outward success, spiritually distressed by compromise and cowardice.
- Afflicted by the knowledge that they’re failing in their fundamental calling.
- Experiencing the hardship of living double lives - knowing truth but not speaking it.
Miserable (eleeinos): Pitiable, deserving compassion
- Their condition is so spiritually pathetic that even their enemies should pity them.
- They deserve compassion because they don’t realize their true spiritual state.
- Like the emperor with no clothes, everyone sees their nakedness except themselves.
Poor (ptochos): Spiritually bankrupt, completely destitute
- Despite material wealth, they have no spiritual riches to show for their ministry.
- Their bank accounts are full but their spiritual accounts are empty.
- They’ve gained the whole world (comfort, respectability, success) but lost their souls.
Blind (tuphlos): Unable to see spiritual reality
- Cannot see the spiritual condition of their Mormon neighbors.
- Cannot see the eternal consequences of their pastoral compromise.
- Cannot see that their comfortable Christianity disgusts Christ.
Naked (gumnos): Exposed, shameful, without covering
- Their compromise and cowardice are visible to all.
- They have no righteous works to cover their spiritual shame.
- Their nakedness will be fully exposed when Christ returns.
The Laodicean Parallel: Ancient and Modern
Ancient Laodicea
Geographic Location: Situated on major trade routes, wealthy banking center.
Economic Condition: Prosperous, self-sufficient, needed no outside help.
Famous Products: Eye salve (Phrygian powder), black wool clothing, banking services.
Water Supply: Lukewarm water piped from hot springs, arriving neither hot nor cold.
Spiritual Condition: Rich materially, poor spiritually.
Modern St. George
Geographic Location: Major retirement destination, growing metropolitan area.
Economic Condition: Prosperous, affluent retirees and successful businesses.
Famous Products: Tourism, real estate development, recreational activities.
Spiritual Supply: Lukewarm Christianity that neither challenges nor transforms.
Spiritual Condition: Rich materially, poor spiritually.
The parallels are not coincidental - they’re prophetic.
The Tyler Robinson Indictment
The transformation of Tyler Robinson from Mormon honor student to political assassin happened under the watch of lukewarm Laodicean pastors who:
Saw the spiritual need but were too comfortable to address it.
Knew the gospel truth but were too cowardly to proclaim it.
Had the resources but were too selfish to use them.
Possessed the authority but were too compromised to exercise it.
Charlie Kirk’s blood cries out against the Laodicean churches of St. George.
The Laodicean Failure Pattern
Self-Satisfaction: “We have good churches, solid doctrine, nice people”.
Risk Avoidance: “We don’t want to offend our Mormon neighbors.”
Comfort Prioritization: “Let’s focus on our own people’s needs.”
Spiritual Blindness: “We’re doing fine, growing, successful.”
Tragic Consequences: Young people like Tyler Robinson spiritually starve while surrounded by “churches."
Christ’s Prescription for Laodicean St. George
I Counsel You…
“I counsel you to buy from Me gold refined in the fire, that you may be rich; and white garments, that you may be clothed, that the shame of your nakedness may not be revealed; and anoint your eyes with eye salve, that you may see.” - Revelation 3:18
Gold Refined in Fire - True Spiritual Wealth
- Genuine faith tested through persecution and opposition.
- Spiritual riches that come from sacrificial ministry.
- Eternal rewards earned through faithful witness.
- Action Required: Start confronting Mormon doctrine regardless of social cost.
White Garments - Righteous Deeds
- Works that spring from genuine faith and love.
- Righteous acts that cover the shame of past compromise.
- Holy living that matches holy profession.
- Action Required: Begin bold evangelism to cover the nakedness of pastoral cowardice.
Eye Salve - Spiritual Sight
- Ability to see spiritual reality clearly.
- Discernment of eternal vs. temporal values.
- Recognition of true spiritual condition.
- Action Required: Acknowledge spiritual bankruptcy and cry out for God’s mercy.
The Irony of Laodicean Eye Salve
Ancient Laodicea was famous for producing eye salve (Phrygian powder) that helped physical vision. Yet the church was spiritually blind and needed Christ’s eye salve to see spiritual reality.
Modern St. George produces:
- Comfortable church services.
- Respectable religious programming.
- Moral family entertainment.
- Conservative political activism.
But Christ says they need HIS eye salve to see:
- The spiritual condition of their Mormon neighbors.
- The eternal consequences of their pastoral compromise.
- The true state of their own hearts.
- The approaching judgment of the lukewarm church.
As Many As I Love, I Rebuke and Chasten
“As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten. Therefore be zealous and repent.” - Revelation 3:19
This letter is not written in anger but in love. Christ rebukes the Laodicean church because He loves them and wants them to repent before it’s too late.
The rebuke comes through:
- Exposure of their true spiritual condition.
- Events like Tyler Robinson’s transformation that reveal pastoral failure.
- Prophetic voices that call them to account.
- Circumstances that strip away comfortable illusions.
The chastening comes through:
- Loss of respect in the community as their compromise becomes obvious.
- Spiritual fruitlessness despite material success.
- Young people leaving the faith because it was never real.
- Growing awareness that they’ve wasted their ministry opportunities.
Therefore be Zealous and Repent
- Zeal: Passionate, urgent commitment to truth regardless of cost.
- Repentance: Fundamental change of direction from comfort to confrontation.
Behold, I Stand at the Door and Knock
“Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me.” - Revelation 3:20
The most tragic verse in Revelation: Christ stands OUTSIDE the church, knocking to get in. The Laodicean church is so lukewarm, so comfortable in their compromise, that Jesus is not welcome inside.
Christ Outside St. George Churches
Jesus stands outside because His presence would:
- Convict them of their cowardice toward Mormon neighbors.
- Challenge their comfortable, prosperity-focused ministries.
- Expose their political idolatry and social conformity.
- Demand sacrificial evangelism that costs social standing.
The knock comes through:
- Prophetic voices that call for repentance.
- Tragic events like Tyler Robinson that expose pastoral failure.
- Biblical conviction about their lukewarm condition.
- Holy Spirit conviction about wasted opportunities.
The invitation is individual: “If anyone hears My voice” - not the whole church, but individual pastors, leaders, members who are willing to repent and open the door to Christ’s lordship.
To Him Who Overcomes
“To him who overcomes I will grant to sit with Me on My throne, as I also overcame and sat down with My Father on His throne.” - Revelation 3:21
Even in the worst church age, individual overcomers receive the greatest promise - sharing Christ’s throne. This promise goes to pastors and believers who:
Overcome Compromise by speaking truth regardless of social cost.
Overcome Comfort by embracing sacrificial ministry.
Overcome Cowardice by confronting false doctrine boldly.
Overcome Conformity by following Christ instead of culture.
The St. George Overcomers
In every Laodicean church, God has individual believers who will:
- Begin sharing the true gospel with Mormon neighbors.
- Confront prosperity gospel and political idolatry in their churches.
- Use their wealth for genuine gospel ministry instead of comfortable living.
- Speak prophetic truth even when it costs friendships and social standing.
These overcomers will sit with Christ on His throne while the lukewarm churches are spewed out of His mouth.
He Who Has an Ear, Let Him Hear
“He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.” - Revelation 3:22
This is the final call to the final church age. The Spirit is speaking to the churches of St. George through:
Current Events: Tyler Robinson’s transformation reveals the spiritual bankruptcy of comfortable Christianity
Prophetic Voices: Those calling the church to repentance and genuine ministry
Biblical Conviction: The Word of God that exposes lukewarm Christianity
Holy Spirit: Internal conviction about wasted opportunities and approaching judgment
Will You Hear?
To the Pastors of St. George: Will you hear Christ’s call to repent of your lukewarm, compromise-filled ministries?
To the Church Members: Will you hear Christ’s call to stop funding comfortable Christianity and start supporting bold gospel ministry?
To the Wealthy Believers: Will you hear Christ’s call to use your resources for eternal purposes instead of temporal comfort?
To the Politicians: Will you hear Christ’s call to speak truth about spiritual matters instead of maintaining convenient religious alliances?
The Final Warning: Spewing Time Approaches
The Laodicean church age is the final church age before Christ’s return. When the lukewarm churches are “vomited out” of Christ’s mouth, the church age ends and the Tribulation period begins.
The churches of St. George stand at the precipice. Tyler Robinson’s transformation from Mormon honor student to political assassin under their watch is a prophetic sign of their spiritual bankruptcy.
Christ will not tolerate lukewarm Christianity much longer.
The choice is binary:
- Repent and become hot - passionate for truth regardless of cost.
- Be spewed out - rejected by Christ and left behind when He comes for His bride.
The Laodicean church of St. George has been weighed in the balances and found wanting. Individual overcomers can still repent and open the door to Christ, but time is running out.
“He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.”
The letter to Laodicea is Christ’s final message to the final church age. St. George represents the perfect fulfillment of Laodicean Christianity - materially prosperous, spiritually impoverished, and nauseating to Christ. The transformation of Tyler Robinson from religious honor student to political assassin happened under their watch because they were too lukewarm to confront the false religion that poisoned his soul.
Christ stands outside these churches, knocking to get in. Individual pastors and believers can still repent and open the door, but the institutional church of the Laodicean age is about to be spewed out of His mouth.
The final call has been issued. Will you hear?
