Who Will Be Watching When Messiah Came?

Luke 2:25-26 “And there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon; and this man was righteous and devout, looking for the consolation of Israel; and the Holy Spirit was upon him. And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Christ.”

Anna the prophetess, aged 84, never left the Temple but worshiped night and day (Luke 2:36-38). When she saw the infant Jesus, she immediately recognized Him and “continued to speak of Him to all those who were looking for the redemption of Jerusalem.”

Who were these people “looking for” the Messiah?

Not the High Priest Caiaphas. Not the Sanhedrin. Not the scribes and Pharisees who studied Torah daily. Not King Herod with all his power. Not the Roman governor Pontius Pilate.

But humble, watching, waiting believers knew.

The Prepared Were Watching

The Magi from the East saw His star and traveled to worship Him (Matthew 2:1-2). They weren’t even Jewish, yet they knew. They had studied the prophecies—likely including Daniel’s 70 weeks—and recognized the season.

The shepherds in the fields were keeping watch over their flocks by night (Luke 2:8). They were watching. The angels appeared to watchers, not to sleepers.

John the Baptist’s parents, Zechariah and Elizabeth, were “both righteous in the sight of God, walking blamelessly in all the commandments and requirements of the Lord” (Luke 1:6). They were prepared. Zechariah was serving in the Temple when Gabriel appeared—doing his duty, being faithful, watching.

The disciples themselves—fishermen, tax collectors, ordinary men—immediately recognized Jesus when He called them.

John 1:41 Andrew found his brother Simon and said, “We have found the Messiah.”

John 1:45 Philip found Nathanael and said, “We have found Him of whom Moses in the Law and also the Prophets wrote—Jesus of Nazareth.”

They knew. They had been waiting. They were watching.

The Connection to the Essenes

Could Jesus’ early disciples have been influenced by Essene teaching?

Consider the evidence:

1. John the Baptist’s background:

Lived in the wilderness (Luke 1:80)
Practiced baptism for repentance (exactly like the Essenes)
Called for holiness and separation
Proclaimed the coming Kingdom
Located near Qumran (Essene community)

2. The disciples’ readiness:

They knew Messiah was coming
They recognized the season
They had studied the prophecies
They understood the times

3. The Essene focus:

Apocalyptic expectation
Studied Daniel’s 70 weeks meticulously
Calculated Jubilee cycles
Maintained God’s original calendar
Separated from corrupted Temple system
Waiting and watching for Messiah

The Essenes weren’t the only ones watching, but they represent a remnant who refused to compromise God’s calendar, who studied prophecy seriously, who maintained holiness, and who expected Messiah based on chronological calculation.

The Religious Elite Missed It

The business and religious empires—Rome and the Jewish religious leadership—both utterly missed Jesus’ coming.

Why?

Matthew 16:3 Jesus rebuked them: “Do you know how to discern the appearance of the sky, but cannot discern the signs of the times?”

They had:

All the Scriptures
The Temple
The priesthood
The religious authority
The scholarly tradition
Daily study of the Law

But they lacked:

Spiritual discernment
Humble watchfulness
Obedience to God’s calendar
Pure hearts seeking truth
Willingness to see what they didn’t expect

Daniel 9:25 clearly prophesied: “So you are to know and discern that from the issuing of a decree to restore and rebuild Jerusalem until Messiah the Prince there will be seven weeks and sixty-two weeks”

69 weeks (483 years) from the decree to Messiah’s arrival.

The date was calculable. The season was knowable. The signs were visible.

Yet the religious experts missed Him.

While humble fishermen, elderly prophetesses, righteous priests, foreign Magi, and wilderness preachers recognized Him immediately.

Ecclesiastes: Nothing New Under the Sun

Ecclesiastes 1:9 “That which has been is that which will be, and that which has been done is that which will be done. So there is nothing new under the sun.”

Solomon’s wisdom echoes through millennia:

What happened at Jesus’ first coming is happening again before His second coming.

Then:

Religious institutions were corrupt
God’s calendar was compromised
Prophecy was ignored or miscalculated
The watching remnant was mocked
Humble believers recognized the season
The powerful missed it entirely

Religious institutions are compromised

The watching church is mocked as “date-setters”

The comfortable church is asleep

Yes, but with context:

The exact day

Knowing we’re in the 120th Jubilee period (49 years) is NOT the same as setting an exact date.
