Excavating the Biblical Connections Between the Last Day and the Harpazo

A Fresh Dig

As biblical archaeologists, we approach this excavation with fresh eyes and childlike curiosity. We have one question: What does the Bible say about "the LAST DAY"?

We will dig systematically through Scripture, examining every reference to this term, paying special attention to:

Jesus' own words
The context of each usage
The connection to resurrection
The relationship to the Harpazo (the catching away/rapture)

Let the Bible speak for itself. Let's dig.

EXCAVATION SITE 1: John Chapter 6

The Context: Jesus as the Bread of Life

Jesus has just fed 5,000 people with five loaves and two fish. The crowd follows Him, and He declares Himself to be the Bread of Life. In this discourse, Jesus mentions "the last day" FOUR TIMES.

Let's examine each occurrence:

John 6:39 "This is the will of Him who sent Me, that of all that He has given Me I lose nothing, but raise it up on the last day."

What we find:

Jesus promises to RAISE UP those given to Him by the Father

This raising happens ON THE LAST DAY

Not before the last day, not after—ON the last day

The will of the Father is that Jesus loses NONE of those given to Him

Key artifacts:

"Raise it up" = resurrection language
"The last day" = specific time marker
"All that He has given Me" = specific group of people (believers)

John 6:40 "For this is the will of My Father, that everyone who beholds the Son and believes in Him will have eternal life, and I Myself will raise him up on the last day."

What we find:

WHO: "everyone who beholds the Son and believes in Him"
WHAT: "will have eternal life"
WHEN: Jesus will "raise him up on the last day"
WHO DOES IT: "I Myself" (Jesus personally does the raising)

Key artifacts:

The condition: beholding + believing (not works, but faith)
The promise: eternal life
The timing: THE LAST DAY
Jesus Himself is the one who raises believers

John 6:44 "No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up on the last day."

What we find:

No one comes to Jesus by their own power
The Father DRAWS people to Jesus
Those who are drawn and come = Jesus raises them up
WHEN: on the last day

Key artifacts:

Election: Father draws, Jesus receives
Guaranteed resurrection for all who come to Jesus
Same timing: THE LAST DAY

John 6:54 "He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day."

What we find:

"Eats My flesh and drinks My blood" = metaphor for believing/receiving Jesus

Present tense possession: "HAS eternal life" (not will have—HAS NOW)

Future resurrection: "I will raise him up"

WHEN: on the last day

Key artifacts:

Eternal life is present possession for believers

But bodily resurrection is future

All believers are raised at the same time: THE LAST DAY

PATTERN DISCOVERED IN JOHN 6

Jesus makes FOUR IDENTICAL PROMISES:

I will raise it up on the last day (v. 39)
I will raise him up on the last day (v. 40)
I will raise him up on the last day (v. 44)
I will raise him up on the last day (v. 54)

This is not accidental. Jesus is emphasizing a specific truth:

ALL BELIEVERS ARE RAISED AT THE SAME TIME: THE LAST DAY.

Not at death. Not in waves. Not in stages separated by years.

THE LAST DAY.

EXCAVATION SITE 2: John Chapter 11 - Martha's Understanding

John 11:21-27 "Martha then said to Jesus, 'Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died. Even now I know that whatever You ask of God, God will give You.' Jesus said to her, 'Your brother will rise again.' Martha said to Him, 'I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day.' Jesus said to her, 'I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in Me will live even if he dies, and everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die. Do you believe this?' She said to Him, 'Yes, Lord; I have believed that You are the Christ, the Son of God, even He who comes into the world.'"

What we find:

Martha's Statement (v. 24)

"I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day."

Key artifacts:

Martha understood Jewish teaching about resurrection

She knew it would happen "on the last day"

She connects resurrection with "the last day"

This was common Jewish belief (based on Old Testament teaching)

Jesus' Response (v. 25-26)

Jesus doesn't correct her timing. He doesn't say "Actually, Martha, there are multiple resurrections at different times."

Instead, Jesus declares: "I AM the resurrection and the life."

What this reveals:

Jesus IS the resurrection (He is the source and power of resurrection)

The resurrection happens when Jesus says it happens

Martha's understanding of "the last day" resurrection is not corrected

Jesus affirms that resurrection is connected to belief in Him

EXCAVATION SITE 3: John Chapter 12 - Judgment and the Last Day

John 12:48 "He who rejects Me and does not receive My sayings, has one who judges him; the word I spoke is what will judge him at the last day."

What we find:

Those who reject Jesus will be judgedWHEN: at the last day
By WHAT: the word Jesus spoke

Key artifact:

"The last day" is a day of JUDGMENT for unbelievers

"The last day" is a day of RESURRECTION for believers

This suggests THE LAST DAY is a singular event involving both resurrection and judgment

CONSOLIDATING THE JOHN EVIDENCE

From the Gospel of John alone, we discover:

THE LAST DAY involves:

Resurrection of believers (John 6:39, 40, 44, 54)
Judgment of unbelievers (John 12:48)
A specific timing (not gradual, not multiple events—THE last day)

Jesus personally performs the resurrection (John 6:40, 44, 54 - "I Myself will raise him up")

This was understood Jewish teaching (John 11:24 - Martha knew this)

EXCAVATION SITE 4: Other New Testament References to "Last Day(s)"

Acts 2:17 - Peter Quoting Joel "'AND IT SHALL BE IN THE LAST DAYS,' God says, 'THAT I WILL POUR FORTH OF MY SPIRIT ON ALL MANKIND; AND YOUR SONS AND YOUR DAUGHTERS SHALL PROPHESY, AND YOUR YOUNG MEN SHALL SEE VISIONS, AND YOUR OLD MEN SHALL DREAM DREAMS.'"

What we find:

Peter identifies Pentecost as beginning of "the last days"

"Last days" (plural) = the entire period from Christ's first coming to His return

We are living IN the last days NOW

2 Timothy 3:1 - Paul's Warning "But realize this, that in the last days difficult times will come."

What we find:

The "last days" include difficult times
This is a period, not a single day
Characteristics: lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, etc.

Hebrews 1:2 "in these last days has spoken to us in His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the world."

What we find:

The writer identifies his own time as "these last days"

God spoke through His Son in the last days

The last days began with Jesus' first coming

James 5:3 "Your gold and your silver have rusted; and their rust will be a witness against you and will consume your flesh like fire. It is in the last days that you have stored up your treasure!"

What we find:

James speaks to his contemporary audience about living "in the last days"

Warning about storing up treasure in the last days

2 Peter 3:3 "Know this first of all, that in the last days mockers will come with their mocking, following after their own lusts."

What we find:

Last days include mockers
They follow their own lusts (SELF again)

1 John 2:18 "Children, it is the last hour; and just as you heard that antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have appeared; from this we know that it is the last hour."

What we find:

John says "it is the last hour" in his own time
Multiple antichrists already present
The "last hour" is the final period before the end

CRITICAL DISCOVERY: "Last Days" vs. "The Last Day"

Two Different (But Related) Concepts

"LAST DAYS" (plural):

A PERIOD of time

Began with Jesus' first coming (Hebrews 1:2)
Continues until His return
We are living IN the last days NOW
Characterized by: Spirit poured out, difficult times, mockers, antichrists

"THE LAST DAY" (singular):

A SPECIFIC day

The day Jesus raises believers (John 6:39, 40, 44, 54)
The day Jesus judges unbelievers (John 12:48)
The FINAL day of the "last days" period
The day of resurrection and judgment

Think of it this way:

"Last days" = the final chapter of human history (we're in it)
"The last day" = the final page of that final chapter

EXCAVATION SITE 5: The Harpazo Connection

What is the Harpazo?

Harpazo = Greek word meaning "to seize, catch up, snatch away"

Key passage:

1 Thessalonians 4:16-17 "For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive and remain will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we shall always be with the Lord."

What we find:

The Lord Himself descends (just as Jesus said "I Myself will raise him up")

The dead in Christ rise FIRST (resurrection)

Then the living believers are caught up (harpazo - seized/snatched)

We meet the Lord in the air

We are with Him forever

Connecting the Harpazo to "The Last Day"

From Jesus' words in John 6:

Jesus will raise believers "on the last day"
ALL believers are raised at the same time
Jesus Himself does the raising

From Paul's words in 1 Thessalonians 4:

The Lord Himself descends
The dead in Christ rise
The living are caught up
This happens at the trumpet of God

The connection:

The resurrection on "the last day" IS the Harpazo event

Dead believers are raised (John 6 + 1 Thess 4)

Living believers are caught up at the same time (1 Thess 4)

It's a single event, not multiple events separated by years

EXCAVATION SITE 6: 1 Corinthians 15 - The Order of Resurrection

1 Corinthians 15:51-52 "Behold, I tell you a mystery; we will not all sleep, but we will all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet; for the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed."

What we find:

"We will not all sleep" = not all believers will die before Christ returns

"We will all be changed" = both dead and living believers transformed

WHEN: "at the last trumpet"

HOW FAST: "in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye"

WHAT HAPPENS: dead raised imperishable, living changed

Key artifact: "THE LAST TRUMPET"

Connecting "Last Trumpet" to "Last Day"

1 Thessalonians 4:16 - "the trumpet of God" 1 Corinthians 15:52 - "the last trumpet"

These are describing the SAME event:

It's the LAST trumpet (no more after this one)
It signals the resurrection of the dead
It signals the transformation of the living
It's when Jesus "raises up" believers

Could "the last trumpet" sound on "the last day"?

The connection is compelling:

Jesus raises believers on THE LAST DAY (John 6)

The trumpet sounds, the dead are raised, the living are changed (1 Cor 15)

This happens "at the last trumpet" - suggesting it's the final trumpet, the end

"Last trumpet" on "the last day" = the Harpazo/Resurrection event

EXCAVATION SITE 7: Types and Shadows of the Harpazo

Old Testament Patterns

The Bible contains several "harpazo-type" events that foreshadow the final catching away:

Enoch (Genesis 5:24) "Enoch walked with God; and he was not, for God took him."

What we find:

Enoch didn't die
God "took" him (removed him, caught him up)
This happened BEFORE the flood judgment
Type/shadow: Believers caught up before wrath

Elijah (2 Kings 2:11) "As they were going along and talking, behold, there appeared a chariot of fire and horses of fire which separated the two of them. And Elijah went up by a whirlwind to heaven."

What we find:

Elijah didn't die
He was taken up to heaven in a whirlwind
Elisha witnessed it
Type/shadow: Sudden catching away, visible ascension

Noah and the Ark (Genesis 7) Noah and his family were "taken" into the ark BEFORE the flood came

What we find:

God shut the door (Genesis 7:16)
The righteous were protected/separated from judgment
Type/shadow: Removal before wrath

Lot and Sodom (Genesis 19) The angels said to Lot: "Hurry, escape there, for I cannot do anything until you arrive there." (Genesis 19:22)

What we find:

God could not bring judgment until Lot was removed
The righteous were evacuated before wrath fell
Type/shadow: Removal precedes judgment

EXCAVATION SITE 8: Resurrection Order in 1 Corinthians 15

1 Corinthians 15:20-26 "But now Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who are asleep. For since by a man came death, by a man also came the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ all will be made alive. But each in his own order: Christ the first fruits, after that those who are Christ's at His coming, then comes the end, when He hands over the kingdom to the God and Father, when He has abolished all rule and all authority and power. For He must reign until He has put all His enemies under His feet. The last enemy that will be abolished is death."

What we find:

The ORDER of resurrection:

"Christ the first fruits" - Jesus was raised first (already happened)

"After that those who are Christ's at His coming" - Believers raised when Jesus comes

This is THE resurrection event for believers

It happens "at His coming"

All "those who are Christ's" are raised at this time

"Then comes the end" - After the resurrection of believers, the end comes

Jesus hands over the kingdom to the Father
All enemies are defeated
Death itself is abolished (the last enemy)

Key discovery:

There are NOT multiple resurrections of believers scattered across time

There is ONE resurrection of "those who are Christ's"

It happens "at His coming"

After this resurrection, "the end" comes

This aligns perfectly with John 6:

Jesus raises all believers "on the last day"

Paul says all believers are raised "at His coming"

Then comes "the end"

"The last day" = "His coming" = when "the end" arrives

EXCAVATION SITE 9: The Day of the Lord

Old Testament Foundation

The prophets spoke extensively about "the Day of the LORD":

Joel 2:31 - "The sun will be turned into darkness and the moon into blood before the great and awesome day of the LORD comes."

Amos 5:18 - "Alas, you who are longing for the day of the LORD, for what purpose will the day of the LORD be to you? It will be darkness and not light."

Zephaniah 1:14-15 - "Near is the great day of the LORD, near and coming very quickly; listen, the day of the LORD! In it the warrior cries out bitterly. A day of wrath is that day, a day of trouble and distress, a day of destruction and desolation, a day of darkness and gloom."

What we find:

"The Day of the LORD" is a day of judgment
It's associated with darkness, wrath, destruction
It's a specific day, not a long period

New Testament Development

1 Thessalonians 5:2-4 "For you yourselves know full well that the day of the Lord will come just like a thief in the night. While they are saying, 'Peace and safety!' then destruction will come upon them suddenly like labor pains upon a woman with child, and they will not escape. But you, brethren, are not in darkness, that the day would overtake you like a thief."

What we find:

The Day of the Lord comes like a thief (unexpected, sudden)

It brings destruction on unbelievers ("they will not escape")

Believers are "not in darkness" - we won't be surprised

It comes "suddenly"

2 Peter 3:10 "But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, in which the heavens will pass away with a roar and the elements will be destroyed with intense heat, and the earth and its works will be burned up."

What we find:

The Day of the Lord involves cosmic destruction
Heavens pass away
Earth and its works burned up
This is clearly THE LAST DAY

CONNECTING ALL THE ARTIFACTS

Let's assemble what we've excavated:

From John 6 (Jesus' own words - 4 times):

Jesus will raise all believers ON THE LAST DAY
This is a specific, singular event
All believers are raised at the same time

From John 11 (Martha's understanding):

resurrection happens "on the last day"
This was common Jewish understanding
Jesus didn't correct this

From John 12 (Judgment):

Unbelievers are judged "at the last day"
The last day involves both resurrection and judgment

From 1 Thessalonians 4 (The Harpazo):

The Lord Himself descends
The dead in Christ rise
The living are caught up
This happens at the trumpet

From 1 Corinthians 15 (Resurrection order):

Christ first (already happened)
Then "those who are Christ's at His coming"
Then comes the end
This happens "at the last trumpet"
In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye

From 1 Thessalonians 5 & 2 Peter 3 (Day of the Lord):

Comes like a thief
Sudden destruction for unbelievers
Cosmic dissolution
The final day

THE SYNTHESIS: A Clear Picture Emerges

"THE LAST DAY" is:

The day Jesus returns ("at His coming" - 1 Cor 15:23)

The day of resurrection for all believers ("I will raise him up on the last day" - John 6:39, 40, 44, 54)

The day the Harpazo occurs (dead raised, living caught up - 1 Thess 4:16-17)

The day the last trumpet sounds (1 Cor 15:52)

The day of judgment for unbelievers (John 12:48)

The Day of the Lord (sudden destruction, cosmic dissolution - 2 Peter 3:10)

The day "the end" comes (1 Cor 15:24)

All of these refer to the SAME EVENT - THE LAST DAY.

CRITICAL IMPLICATIONS

Implication 1: The Harpazo Happens on the Last Day

If Jesus promises to raise all believers "on the last day," and Paul describes the resurrection of dead believers and catching up of living believers at the trumpet, these must be the same event.
The Harpazo IS the resurrection event of the last day.

Implication 2: There is One Resurrection of Believers

Jesus doesn't say "I will raise SOME of you on the last day and OTHERS at different times."

He says: "I will raise HIM up on the last day" - every single believer who comes to Him.

All believers are raised at the same time: the last day.

Implication 3: The Last Day is the End of History

After "those who are Christ's" are raised "at His coming," Paul says "THEN COMES THE END" (1 Cor 15:24).

The last day is truly THE LAST DAY - the final day of human history as we know it.

Implication 4: Believers and Judgment

Jesus judges unbelievers "at the last day" (John 12:48). Believers are raised "on the last day" (John 6).

Both happen on the same day.

This suggests believers are removed/resurrected and then judgment falls on the remaining unbelievers.

TYPES AND SHADOWS CONFIRMED

The Old Testament patterns all point to the same truth:

Enoch: Taken before flood judgment (removal before wrath) Elijah: Caught up suddenly (harpazo image) Noah: Protected in ark before judgment fell Lot: Evacuated before destruction came

Pattern: The righteous are removed/protected BEFORE wrath falls on the wicked.

Fulfillment: Believers are caught up/resurrected on the last day, THEN judgment comes.

CONCLUSION OF THE DIG

After excavating every reference to "the last day" and examining the Harpazo passages, a clear biblical picture emerges:

THE LAST DAY is a specific, singular event when:

Jesus returns personally ("I Myself will raise him up")
All dead believers are resurrected
All living believers are caught up (Harpazo)
The last trumpet sounds
Believers are transformed in an instant
Judgment falls on unbelievers
The Day of the Lord begins
"The end" comes
Human history as we know it concludes

This is not multiple events separated by years. This is ONE DAY - THE LAST DAY.

Jesus could not have been clearer: "I will raise him up ON THE LAST DAY."

Four times He said it. Martha understood it. Paul described it. John confirmed it.

The last day. The day of resurrection. The day of the Harpazo. The Day of the Lord. The end.
All one event. All one day. THE LAST DAY.

This archaeological dig has uncovered a biblical treasure: the clear, consistent teaching that all believers will be raised/caught up on a specific day - THE LAST DAY - when Jesus returns. This is the Harpazo. This is the resurrection. This is the Day of the Lord. And we are living in the "last days" that lead up to this "last day."
