The Merit Trap

How Cain’s Altar Reveals the Battle Between Grace and Religion in the Great Basin

The time for comfortable Christianity is over. The Great Basin—a land promised, built, and sustained on an altar of human effort, ritual, and works—is about to be shaken to its foundations.

For too long, the Church has been a mirror of the world, peddling self-improvement, political salvation, and a gospel of 'grace after all you can do.' But there is a line in the sand, drawn in the blood of the Lamb, separating the seed of the Serpent from the true REMNAINT of God.

If your heart is weary of the hollow performance, the dead traditions, and the twin tyrannies of politics and religion, then this word is for you.

Tear down Cain's altar.

You are not called to merit, but to the scandalous, terrifying, and all-sufficient finished work of Jesus Christ. The hour is late. The Truth is a fire—and it’s time to burn the false temples down.

Thanksgiving 2025: The Altar of Gratitude

November 27, 2025

Today, millions across America will gather around tables laden with food, surrounded by family, pausing—however briefly—to give thanks.

But thankful to whom? And for what?

For many, Thanksgiving has become a cultural ritual—a day to celebrate abundance, achievement, and the American dream. We give thanks for our health, our wealth, our success, our freedom. We thank the universe, fate, or our own hard work.

But here’s the question that exposes everything: Are we truly thankful, or are we simply celebrating ourselves?

True thanksgiving is not about what we’ve accomplished. It’s about what Christ has done.

True thanksgiving is not about our merit. It’s about His grace.

True thanksgiving doesn’t build an altar to our own effort—it lays everything down at the foot of the cross and says, “Not my will, but Yours be done.”

On this Thanksgiving Day 2025, we must ask ourselves: Which altar are we building?

Are we offering God the fruit of our labor—our achievements, our self-sufficiency, our pride—like Cain?

Or are we bringing the blood of the Lamb—confessing our desperate need, surrendering our lives, trusting only in His finished work—like Abel?

Because how we give thanks reveals whose seed we are from.

This is not just ancient history. This is the battle for your soul, happening right now, today, in your heart.

Let’s dig deep into the Scriptures and uncover the truth about gratitude, grace, and the two altars that define all of human history.

-----

Two Brothers, Two Seeds, Two Systems

In the beginning, there were two brothers standing at two altars.

One brought the fruit of his labor—grain from the cursed ground, harvested by the sweat of his brow, a monument to human effort and self-sufficiency.

The other brought a lamb—innocent blood shed, life poured out, a confession that without the shedding of blood there is no remission of sin.

God accepted one and rejected the other.

And in that moment of divine judgment, the entire trajectory of human history was set in motion. Two seeds. Two systems. Two kingdoms colliding in the heart of every human being who has ever lived.

Cain represented the way of merit—the religion of Satan.

Abel represented the way of grace—the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

This isn’t ancient history. This is happening right now, today, in every church, every heart, and every community across the Great Basin Region.

The question is: which altar are you building? Which seed are you from? Which system are you serving?

Let’s dig deep into the archaeology of Scripture and uncover the hidden war that began in Genesis 3, exploded in Genesis 4, and is reaching its climax right now in our generation.

-----

The Fall—When Satan Introduced the Merit System

The Deception in the Garden: Forbidden Knowledge and the Lie of Self-Sufficiency

Before we can understand Cain and Abel, we must understand what happened in Genesis 3. This is where everything went wrong. This is where Satan introduced the most devastating weapon in his arsenal: the merit-based system.

Here’s what most people miss: Adam and Eve did not repent.

Think about that. They sinned. They were confronted by God. And what did they do?

- Adam blamed Eve and God: “The woman whom You gave to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I ate.” (Genesis 3:12)

- Eve blamed the serpent: “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.” (Genesis 3:13)

Not one word of repentance. Not one plea for mercy. Not one cry for forgiveness. No humility. No brokenness. No acknowledgment of guilt or responsibility.

Why?

Because they had already bought into Satan’s lie that they could become like God—independent, self-sufficient, and self-determining.

Satan’s pitch to Eve wasn’t just about eating fruit. It was a complete philosophical and spiritual system:

God is holding out on you. “Has God indeed said, ‘You shall not eat of every tree of the garden’?” (Genesis 3:1) — Satan plants doubt about God’s goodness and generosity.

God is lying to you. “You will not surely die.” (Genesis 3:4) — Satan directly contradicts God’s Word, claiming there are no consequences for rebellion.

You can become like God. “For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” (Genesis 3:5) — Satan offers autonomy, independence, and self-deification.

This is the essence of the merit-based system: You don’t need God’s grace. You don’t need His provision. You can earn your own way. You can determine your own truth. You can become your own god.

And Adam and Eve believed it.

-----

The Curse and the Promise: Enmity Between Two Seeds

After the Fall, God pronounced judgment—but also made a promise:

“And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her Seed; He shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise His heel.” (Genesis 3:15)

This is the Protoevangelium—the first Gospel. The promise of a coming Redeemer who would crush Satan’s head and restore what was lost.

But notice: there are two seeds mentioned.

- The seed of the serpent — those aligned with Satan’s kingdom of lies, rebellion, and self-sufficiency

- The seed of the woman — those aligned with God’s kingdom of truth, grace, and redemption

Throughout human history, these two seeds have been at war. And the primary battlefield is the human heart.

Every person born into this world is born under the curse—spiritually dead, enslaved to sin, separated from God. We are all, by nature, children of the serpent’s seed (John 8:44, Ephesians 2:1-3).

But God, in His mercy, offers a way back—not through merit, not through religion, not through human effort—but through grace alone, by faith alone, in Christ alone.

And this is where Cain and Abel enter the story.

-----

Cain and Abel—Two Altars, Two Hearts, Two Systems

The Opportunity to Repent

Genesis 4 opens with the birth of two sons:

“Now Adam knew Eve his wife, and she conceived and bore Cain, and said, ‘I have acquired a man from the LORD.’ Then she bore again, this time his brother Abel. Now Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.” (Genesis 4:1-2)

Here’s what’s remarkable: Cain and Abel had an opportunity their parents didn’t take—they could repent.

They grew up outside of Eden, in a fallen world, under the curse. But they knew the story. They knew about sin. They knew about judgment. They knew about the promise of a coming Redeemer.

And when the time came to worship God, they each brought an offering.

But their offerings revealed something profound: what was in their hearts.

-----

Abel’s Offering: The Way of Grace

“Abel also brought of the firstborn of his flock and of their fat. And the LORD respected Abel and his offering.” (Genesis 4:4)

Abel brought a blood sacrifice—a lamb, the firstborn, the best he had.

Why?

Because Abel understood something fundamental: sin requires death. The wages of sin is death (Romans 6:23). And the only way to be reconciled to God is through the shedding of innocent blood.

Abel’s sacrifice pointed forward to Jesus Christ—the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world (John 1:29).

Abel’s altar was an altar of faith (Hebrews 11:4). He believed God’s promise. He trusted in God’s provision. He confessed his need for grace.

Abel represented the seed of the woman—the way of Christ, the Gospel of grace.

-----

Cain’s Offering: The Way of Merit

“And in the process of time it came to pass that Cain brought an offering of the fruit of the ground to the LORD. But He did not respect Cain and his offering.” (Genesis 4:3-5)

Cain brought the fruit of his labor—vegetables, grain, and produce from the cursed ground.

On the surface, it seems reasonable. He worked hard. He grew crops. He brought what he had.

But here’s the problem: there was no blood. There was no death. There was no acknowledgment of sin.

Cain’s offering said, “Look what I’ve accomplished. Look what I’ve produced. I’ve earned Your approval through my effort.”

Cain’s altar was an altar of works—the merit-based system Satan introduced in the Garden.

And God rejected it.

Not because vegetables are inherently bad, but because Cain’s heart was wrong. He was trying to approach God on his own terms, through his own effort, apart from grace.

Cain represented the seed of the serpent—the way of Satan, the religion of merit.

-----

God’s Warning to Cain: The Battle for the Soul

After God rejected Cain’s offering, notice what happens:

“So the LORD said to Cain, ‘Why are you angry? And why has your countenance fallen? If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin lies at the door. And its desire is for you, but you should rule over it.’” (Genesis 4:6-7)

God gave Cain a chance to repent. He warned him. He showed him the path forward.

But Cain refused.

Instead, he murdered his brother.

Why? Because Abel’s faith exposed Cain’s self-righteousness. Abel’s grace-filled worship condemned Cain’s merit-based religion.

“Do not be like Cain, who belonged to the evil one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his own actions were evil and his brother’s were righteous.” (1 John 3:12)

Cain’s DNA was revealed. He was of the serpent’s seed—a child of Satan, enslaved to the merit system, hostile to grace, and murderous toward those who walk in truth.

-----

The Luciferian System—Politics and Religion as Tools of Control

How Satan Governs the World

After Adam and Eve fell, Satan established his kingdom on earth. And the primary tools he uses to control humanity are politics and religion.

Why these two?

Because they both operate on the merit-based system—the lie that you can earn your way to righteousness, power, security, and salvation through human effort, compliance, and performance.

Politics says: “If you follow the right leader, support the right party, pass the right laws, you’ll create heaven on earth.”

Religion says: “If you perform the right rituals, follow the right rules, attend the right services, you’ll earn God’s favor.”

Both are lies. Both are Babylon. Both are Satan’s counterfeit kingdom.

-----

The Tower of Babel: Satan’s Blueprint for World Government

After the Flood, humanity gathered in the land of Shinar under the leadership of Nimrod—a mighty hunter, a tyrant, a rebel against God.

And what did they do?

“Come, let us build ourselves a city, and a tower whose top is in the heavens; let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be scattered abroad over the face of the whole earth.” (Genesis 11:4)

This is the Luciferian agenda:

- Human achievement apart from God — “Let us build”

- Self-glorification — “Let us make a name for ourselves”

- Rebellion against God’s command — God told humanity to fill the earth (Genesis 9:1), but they refused to scatter

- Unity through pride and rebellion — They sought to unify humanity under a single government, a single language, a single religion

This is Babylon—the spiritual, political, and religious system that Satan uses to deceive the nations and oppose the Kingdom of God.

And Babylon is still operating today.

-----

Satan’s World Leaders: A History of Tyranny

Throughout history, Satan has raised up world leaders to advance his agenda:

- Nimrod — The first tyrant, builder of Babel

- Nebuchadnezzar The king who demanded worship of his image

- Alexander the Great — The conqueror who spread Hellenistic paganism

- Nero — The emperor who persecuted Christians

- Pope John XII and Benedict IX — Corrupt religious leaders who perverted the Gospel

- Muhammad — The founder of a false religion that denies Christ

- Joseph Smith – The founder of a false religion that denies the deity of Jesus.

- Hitler — The genocidal dictator who sought to exterminate God’s people

And many, many more.

Every current world leader operates within Satan’s system of politics and religion—whether they know it or not.

-----

Jesus—The One Who Avoided Politics and Religion

The Scandal of the Incarnation

When Jesus came to earth, He did something shocking: He avoided both politics and religion.

The religious leaders expected a political Messiah—someone who would overthrow Rome, restore Israel’s kingdom, and establish Jewish dominance.

The political leaders expected a religious puppet—someone who would legitimize their power and keep the people in line.

But Jesus refused to play their game.

He rejected politics:

- When they tried to make Him king by force, He withdrew (John 6:15)

- When they tried to trap Him with political questions, He exposed their hypocrisy (Matthew 22:15-22)

- When Pilate asked if He was a king, Jesus said, “My kingdom is not of this world” (John 18:36)

He rejected religion:

- He exposed the Pharisees as hypocrites, whitewashed tombs, blind guides, and children of the devil (Matthew 23, John 8:44)

- He cleansed the temple, overturning the tables of the religious economy (Matthew 21:12-13)

- He declared that true worship is not about location or ritual, but spirit and truth (John 4:23-24)

Jesus didn’t come to reform politics or fix religion. He came to destroy the works of the devil (1 John 3:8).

-----

The Cross: Where Politics and Religion Killed the Son of God—and Lost

In the end, Jesus used both politics and religion to accomplish redemption.

The religious leaders conspired to arrest Him, accuse Him, and demand His death.

The political leaders condemned Him, mocked Him, and crucified Him.

Together, politics and religion nailed the sinless Son of God to a Roman cross.

But in doing so, they sealed their own doom.

“Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it.” (Colossians 2:15)

On the cross, Jesus:

- Paid the full penalty for sin

- Destroyed the power of death

- Defeated Satan and his demons

- Made a way for humanity to be reconciled to God by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone

The merit-based system was obliterated. The works-righteousness of religion was exposed as filthy rags. The political power of Satan was stripped away.

The cross is the ultimate declaration: salvation is not by merit—it’s by grace.

-----

The Great Basin Church—Cain’s Altar Rebuilt

The Blind American Church

Now we arrive at the present moment—the Church in the Great Basin Region.

And here’s the uncomfortable truth: the Church has rebuilt Cain’s altar.

The American Church, particularly in the Great Basin, has become a perfect reflection of politics and religion—the very systems Jesus rejected and Satan uses to blind and enslave.

Instead of preaching the Gospel of grace, the Church preaches:

- Self-improvement instead of repentance

- Prosperity instead of the cross

- Nationalism instead of the Kingdom of God

- Political allegiance instead of allegiance to Christ

- Moral behavior instead of spiritual transformation

- Works-based righteousness instead of grace

This is Cain’s religion. This is the merit-based system. This is Babylon.

-----

The Dead Works Church

In the Great Basin Region, there is ONE dominant religious institution that has held cultural, political, and spiritual power for over a century.

And it is the perfect embodiment of the merit-based system.

This church teaches:

- Salvation by works—baptism, temple rituals, obedience to laws and ordinances

- Progression toward godhood through human effort

- A false Jesus—a created being, not the eternal Son of God

- A false gospel—salvation by grace after all you can do

This is not Christianity. This is another gospel (Galatians 1:6-9). This is the religion of Cain.

And tragically, millions are trapped in the DEAD WORKS—spiritually dead, religiously active, but dead in their sins, trusting in their own merit instead of the grace of God.

They go to church every Sunday. They follow the rules. They perform the rituals. They believe they’re saved.

But they have never repented. They have never been born again. They have never surrendered to Jesus Christ as Lord.

They are building Cain’s altar—and God is not accepting their offering.

-----

The Lukewarm COMA Church: The Social Club

But the problem isn’t just the ONE church. The problem extends to the evangelical churches across the Great Basin. The Coma Church, or the Coma Club.

Many of these churches have become social clubs—reflecting American culture instead of challenging it, baptizing nationalism instead of proclaiming the Kingdom, offering self-help instead of the Gospel. They act like they are in a lukewarm COMA.

In the Great Basin people “church shop” as if they’re looking for the best entertainment, the most comfortable seating, the best coffee, the friendliest people.

They try out a church like they’re test-driving a car.

The church is in a COMA, yet. But the Church should not be a social club. The Church is the Bride of Christ, the pillar and ground of truth, the embassy of the Kingdom of God in enemy territory.

And when the Church stops preaching repentance, stops calling sinners to surrender, stops proclaiming Jesus as Lord—it becomes just another version of Cain’s religion and politics–The COMA Church.

-----

MAGA Christianity: Politics as Savior

And then there’s the unholy marriage of Christianity and politics—the MAGA movement.

Many Christians in the Great Basin (and across America) have placed their hope, their identity, and their allegiance in a political leader, a political party, and a political movement.

They believe that if they can just win the right elections, pass the right laws, and restore “Christian values” to America, they can save the nation.

This is Babylon. This is the Tower of Babel. This is Satan’s system.

Politics will not save America. A political leader will not save the Church. Nationalism is not the Gospel. HAVE YOU READ THE LAST CHAPTER OF THE BIBLE?

Jesus is the only Savior. And His Kingdom is not of this world.

When the Church aligns itself with political power, it always compromises the Gospel. It always becomes corrupted. It always becomes Cain’s religion—trusting in human effort, human systems, human merit. Nimrod and Babel.

-----

The Call to Repentance—Building Abel’s Altar

The Only Solution: Jesus

So what’s the answer?

Not politics. Not religion. Not reform. Not revival through human effort.

The answer is Jesus Christ—and Him crucified.

The Gospel is not a self-help program. It’s not a political movement. It’s not a moral code.

The Gospel is the declaration that Jesus Christ is Lord—and that salvation is by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone.

Here’s what true repentance looks like:

Acknowledging your sin — You are not a good person who needs a little help. You are a sinner, dead in your trespasses, enslaved to Satan, under the wrath of God.

Renouncing your merit — You cannot earn your way to God. Your good works are filthy rags. Your religious performance is worthless. Your political activism cannot save you.

Believing in Jesus Christ — Not just believing facts about Him, but trusting Him, surrendering to Him, receiving Him as Lord and Savior.

Walking in His grace — Living not by the merit-based system, but by the power of the Holy Spirit, in humility, love, and obedience to Christ.

-----

Building Abel’s Altar in the Great Basin

The Great Basin Region desperately needs a spiritual awakening—not a religious revival, but a Gospel awakening.

We need churches that preach Christ crucified, not self-improvement.

We need believers who proclaim the Lordship of Jesus, not political allegiance.

We need disciples who walk by faith, not by merit.

We need to tear down Cain’s altar and build Abel’s altar—an altar of grace, an altar of blood, an altar that points to the Lamb of God.

It’s about showing the Great Basin Region—and the world—that the only way forward is Jesus.

Not politics. Not religion. Not human effort.

Jesus. Grace. Faith. The cross.

-----

Which Altar Are You Building?

Two brothers. Two altars. Two seeds. Two systems.

Cain’s altar the way of merit, self-sufficiency, religion, politics, human effort, and pride. The altar God rejects.

Abel’s altarthe way of grace, faith, humility, surrender, and the blood of the Lamb. The altar God accepts.

Every person who has ever lived stands at this choice.

Which altar are you building?

Are you trusting in your own righteousness, your own effort, your own merit?

Or are you trusting in the finished work of Jesus Christ?

The Great Basin Region is at a crossroads. The American Church is at a crossroads. You are at a crossroads.

The alarm is sounding. The house is on fire. The foundation is a lie.

It’s time to repent. It’s time to tear down Cain’s altar. It’s time to build Abel’s altar.

It’s time to stop trusting in politics and religion and start trusting in Jesus Christ alone.

Because knowing about Jesus doesn’t save you. Believing in Jesus—surrendering to Him as Lord—that’s everything.

“For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.” (Ephesians 2:8-9)

Grace alone. Faith alone. Christ alone.

This is the Gospel. This is the only way. This is Abel’s altar.

Will you build it?

The Great Basin awaits. The harvest is ready. The King is coming.

Let’s be found faithful.
