A Heartfelt Apology from the Shepherds

Confessing Our Failures to Generation Z

"For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables." - 2 Timothy 4:3-4

Dear Generation Z,

We come before you today with broken hearts, trembling hands, and the weight of eternal consequences heavy upon our souls. We are the pastors, teachers, ministers, and spiritual leaders who were entrusted with feeding you the pure Word of God - and we have failed you catastrophically.

WE ARE SORRY.
WE CONFESS.
WE REPENT.

OUR CONFESSION: WE WERE THE EAR-TICKLERS

We Chose Comfort Over Truth

Generation Z, we confess: When you needed to hear hard truths about sin, repentance, and the narrow gate, we gave you feel-good messages about your "best life now." When you needed to hear about the fear of the Lord, we told you only about His love. When you needed to hear about dying to self, we preached about fulfilling your dreams.

We were the very "ear-ticklers" Paul warned about in 2 Timothy 4:3.

We saw your itching ears - your desire for messages that made you feel good about yourselves - and instead of being faithful watchmen who warned of coming judgment, we became merchants selling you what you wanted to hear.

We chose your comfort over your souls. We chose our popularity over your eternity.

We Watered Down the Gospel

We confess: We took the sharp sword of God's Word and dulled its blade. We took the pure milk of Scripture and diluted it until it had no power to save. We preached:

"God loves you just as you are" instead of "Repent and be transformed"

"Follow your heart" instead of "The heart is deceitfully wicked"

"You're enough" instead of "You need a Savior"

"Live your truth" instead of "Jesus is THE truth"

"God wants you happy" instead of "God wants you holy"

"You were born this way" instead of "You must be born again"

We gave you cotton candy when you needed meat. We gave you motivational speeches when you needed prophetic warnings.

OUR SINS: WE BUILT KINGDOMS FOR OURSELVES

We Served Our Egos Instead of Our King

Generation Z, we confess: We weren't shepherds - we were hirelings. We weren't servants - we were celebrities. We weren't watchmen - we were entertainers.

We built platforms instead of altars.
We counted followers instead of making disciples.
We sought applause instead of anointing.
We craved influence instead of intimacy with Christ.

The Megachurch Deception

We built massive buildings and boasted about attendance numbers while your souls starved for authentic encounter with the living God. We created Christian entertainment complexes and called them churches. We offered you coffee bars and light shows when you desperately needed the fire of God and the conviction of the Holy Spirit.

We measured success by crowd size instead of changed lives.

We celebrated our brands instead of exalting the name of Jesus.

The Social Media Seduction

We confess: We became addicted to likes, shares, and viral videos. We crafted messages that would trend rather than transform. We chose controversy that would boost engagement over conviction that would bring repentance.

We made ourselves the stars of our own ministries instead of making Christ the center of everything.

OUR GREATEST FAILURE: WE DIDN'T PREPARE YOU

We Failed to Warn You of the Times

Generation Z, this is our greatest shame: We knew the signs of the times. We saw prophecy being fulfilled before our eyes. We recognized that you were the final generation before Christ's return. And we said nothing.

While you needed to hear about the King and the coming Kingdom of God:

The Rapture - We preached prosperity
The Great Tribulation - We preached positive thinking
The Antichrist - We preached about your personal breakthrough
The Mark of the Beast - We preached about financial blessing
The Second Coming - We preached about your earthly destiny

We were supposed to be your prophetic voices, and we became your cheerleaders instead.

We Failed to Call You to Holiness

When sexual immorality exploded among your generation, we remained silent rather than risk being called "judgmental." When gender confusion swept through your schools, we chose inclusivity over biblical truth. When pride month became a celebration, we participated instead of proclaiming God's design for sexuality.

We were afraid of your rejection, so we rejected our calling to speak truth in love.

We feared losing our congregations more than we feared God losing you to deception.

We Failed to Equip You for Battle

Generation Z, we sent you into a spiritual war zone with water guns instead of the sword of the Spirit. We should have taught you to:

Discern the spirits - Instead we taught you to be accepting

Test everything against Scripture - Instead we taught you to follow your feelings

Stand for righteousness - Instead we taught you to go along to get along

Contend for the faith - Instead we taught you that all roads lead to heaven

We left you defenseless against the very deceptions that are now consuming your generation.

THE BLOOD IS ON OUR HANDS

We Bear Responsibility for the Apostasy

Generation Z, we must confess the terrible truth: The moral and spiritual collapse of your generation didn't happen in a vacuum. It happened on our watch. Under our leadership. Because of our compromise.

When you embraced:

LGBTQ+ ideology - We had already compromised on biblical sexuality.

Climate activism as religion - We had already made this world your focus instead of the next.

Social justice as gospel - We had already replaced the cross with social causes.

Feelings as truth - We had already elevated experience over Scripture.

Self-worship - We had already made you the center instead of Christ.

We paved the road that led you away from the cross.

Ezekiel 34: The Judgment on Bad Shepherds

God's words to the shepherds of Israel echo our condemnation:

"Woe to the shepherds of Israel who feed themselves! Should not the shepherds feed the flocks? You eat the fat and clothe yourselves with the wool; you slaughter the fatlings, but you do not feed the flock. The weak you have not strengthened, nor have you healed those who were sick, nor bound up the broken, nor brought back what was driven away, nor sought what was lost; but with force and cruelty you have ruled them." Ezekiel 34:2-4

We fed ourselves instead of feeding you.

We built our kingdoms instead of preparing you for His Kingdom.

We sought the lost checks instead of the lost souls.

OUR REPENTANCE: NO EXCUSES, ONLY TRUTH

We Cannot Blame the Culture

Generation Z, we will not blame secular culture for your deception. We will not blame the media, the schools, or the government. The blame lies squarely on us - the shepherds who were called to protect you and failed.

We had the truth, and we hid it.
We had the power of the Gospel, and we diluted it.
We had the authority of Scripture, and we questioned it.
We had the calling to be watchmen, and we became entertainers.

We Cannot Blame You

We will not say "this generation is hard to reach" or "young people just don't want to hear the truth." The truth is, we never gave you the real truth to reject. We gave you a watered-down, seeker-friendly, culturally-acceptable version of Christianity that had no power to save and no authority to transform.

You were hungry for the supernatural, and we gave you programs.

You were desperate for authentic spirituality, and we gave you Christian entertainment.

You were searching for absolute truth, and we gave you relativism with a Christian label.

THE DAMAGE WE HAVE CAUSED

Souls Lost Because of Our Silence

Generation Z, we must face the horrific reality: Because we failed to preach the full Gospel, because we compromised on biblical truth, because we chose popularity over prophecy - souls have been lost.

Young people who could have been saved are now hardened to the Gospel because they think they've already heard it and rejected it. But they never heard the real Gospel - they only heard our watered-down version.

How many of your friends are now unreachable because they think Christianity is what we showed them?

How many are now deceived because we didn't warn them about the deceptions coming?

How many are now lost because we were too cowardly to offend them with the truth that could have set them free?

The Laodicean Church We Created

We confess: We created the very Laodicean church that Christ said He would vomit from His mouth. We made you:

Lukewarm - Neither hot nor cold for Jesus.

Self-satisfied - Thinking you had need of nothing.

Spiritually blind - Unable to see your true condition.

Spiritually poor - Despite all our programs and activities.

Spiritually naked - Without the righteousness that comes from genuine salvation

We turned you into the very generation that Christ rebukes in Revelation 3:14-22.

OUR PLEA: THERE'S STILL TIME

Forgive Us, But Don't Follow Us

Generation Z, we beg your forgiveness - but we also beg you not to follow our example. Don't let our failures become your excuse for remaining deceived. Don't let our compromise justify your rebellion against God's truth.

We failed you, but Jesus never has and never will.

We lied to you, but His Word is still true.

We led you astray, but the Holy Spirit can still lead you home.

Go Directly to Jesus

Generation Z, bypass us compromised shepherds and go directly to Jesus. Read His Word for yourself. Let the Holy Spirit teach you truth. Don't depend on pastors who failed you - depend on the Pastor who died for you.

"All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work." 2 Timothy 3:16-17

The Bible hasn't failed you - we have. Trust the Word, not the workers who mishandled it.

OUR DESPERATE FINAL PLEA

Time Is Running Out

Generation Z, we have no time for self-pity or extended grieving over our failures. The signs are screaming that Christ's return is imminent. The fig tree generation is aging. The final harvest is ready.

We wasted precious years giving you false hope. Don't waste precious days holding onto false beliefs.

The Truth We Should Have Told You

Here is what we should have preached from the beginning:

You are a sinner in need of a Savior - Romans 3:23

Hell is real and you're headed there without Christ - Revelation 20:15

Jesus died to pay for your sins - 1 Corinthians 15:3-4

You must be born again - John 3:3

Salvation is by grace through faith, not works - Ephesians 2:8-9

Following Christ requires denying yourself - Luke 9:23

The road to life is narrow and few find it - Matthew 7:14

Christ is coming back soon - Revelation 22:20

You must be holy - 1 Peter 1:16

There is only one way to heaven - John 14:6

This is the Gospel we should have preached. This is the truth that can still save you.

OUR FINAL CONFESSION

We Were Hirelings, Not Shepherds

"But a hireling, he who is not the shepherd, one who does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and flees; and the wolf catches the sheep and scatters them. The hireling flees because he is a hireling and does not care about the sheep." John 10:12-13

Generation Z, we confess: We were hirelings who fled when the wolves of deception came for you. We should have laid down our lives to protect you from false teaching. Instead, we protected our reputations and let the wolves scatter the flock.

We cared more about our careers than your souls.

We cared more about our comfort than your eternity.

We cared more about our kingdoms than His Kingdom.

Our Final Words

Generation Z, we have no right to ask for your forgiveness - our failures are too great. We have no right to ask for another chance - time has run out. We have no right to ask for your trust - we forfeited that long ago.

But we do have the right to speak one final truth:

JESUS LOVES YOU MORE THAN WE FAILED YOU.

His grace is greater than our sin.

His truth is stronger than our lies.

His calling on your life is more powerful than our compromise.

Don't let our failures keep you from His salvation.

Don't let our weakness keep you from His strength.

Don't let our deception keep you from His truth.

FROM THE DEPTHS OF OUR SOULS

Generation Z,

We are sorry we chose crowds over character.

We are sorry we chose comfort over conviction.

We are sorry we chose popularity over prophecy.

We are sorry we chose influence over integrity.

We are sorry we chose our kingdoms over His Kingdom.

We are sorry we chose your applause over God's approval.

We are sorry we failed as your shepherds.

We are sorry we missed our divine appointment with your generation.

WE ARE SORRY.

But most of all, we are sorry that our failures may have cost some of you your souls.

There's no time left for our tears. There's no time left for our regrets.

There's only time for you to run to Jesus while His arms are still open.

There's only time for you to cry out for salvation while He can still be found.

There's only time for you to turn from deception to truth while the door of grace remains open.

Please, Generation Z - don't let our failures damn your souls.

Go to Jesus. Go now. Go while there's still time.

The King is coming. The trumpet is about to sound.

Be ready.

With broken hearts and desperate hope,

The Shepherds Who Failed You

"Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me away from Your presence, and do not take Your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of Your salvation, and uphold me by Your generous Spirit. Then I will teach transgressors Your ways, and sinners shall be converted to You." - Psalm 51:10-13

Even so, come Lord Jesus. Come quickly.
